The Impact of the AIDS Epidemic on African Firms
نویسندگان
چکیده
The effect on firms of the AIDS epidemic depends upon the strength of two factors. First, work force attrition resulting from illness or death due to HIV infection must be a large proportion of the total worker attrition in firms. Second, the higher rates of worker attrition should adversely effect firms’ costs and performance. Using primary survey data from five sub-Saharan African countries, covering 992 firms with total employment of 115,136 workers, this study finds both effects to be minor.

Iv. Impact on Firms
The impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic goes far beyond the household level. Firms and businesses may also be affected as HIV-infected people are usually in the prime working years and are involved in the process of production. If HIV prevalence reaches a high level in a country or within a firm, the impact of the disease may be dramatic for the business or firm involved. The present chapter introd...
متن کاملA review on West African Ebola epidemic dynamics models
Background and aims: The world is threatened by disease outbreak that reaches a public health emergency of international concern, studies to inform public and agencies for effective containment strategy are necessary. Several studies provided vital information of the dynamics and control of Ebola epidemic outbreak in West Africa. Methodologies and techniques in those researches...
متن کاملAIDS Epidemic Modeling With Different Demographic Structures
The most urgent public health problem today is to devise effective strategies to minimize the destruction caused by the AIDS epidemic. Mathematical models based on the underlying transmission mechanisms of the AIDS virus can help the medical/scientific community understand and anticipate its spread in different populations and evaluate the potential effectiveness of different approaches for bri...
متن کاملAn epidemic model for the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS with different clinical stages
In this paper, a five–dimensional mathematical model is proposed for the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS within a population of varying size. In writing the model, we have divided the population under consideration into five sub classes of susceptible, infective, pre-AIDS, AIDS related complex and that of AIDS patients. The model has two non- negative equilibria namely, a disease free and the...
متن کاملThe Gift of the Dying: The Tragedy of AIDS and the Welfare of Future African Generations
This paper simulates the impact of the AIDS epidemic on future living standards in South Africa. I emphasize two competing effects. On the one hand, the epidemic is likely to have a detrimental impact on the human capital accumulation of orphaned children. On the other hand, widespread community infection lowers fertility, both directly, through a reduction in the willingness to engage in unpro...
